  5. Open Video Project

    The purpose of the Open Video Project is to collect and make available a repository of digitized video content for the digital video, multimedia retrieval, digital library, and other research communities. Researchers can use the video to study a wide range of problems, such as tests of algorithms for automatic segmentation, summarization, and creation of surrogates that describe video content; the development of face recognition algorithms; or creating and evaluating interfaces that display result sets from multimedia queries. Because researchers attempting to solve similar problems will have access to the same video content, the repository is also intended to be used as a test collection that will enable systems to be compared, similar to the way the TREC conferences are used for text retrieval.

    This site catalgues video and audio lectures on academic topics according to discipline, theoretician and topic. Most of the material here is from universities or radio stations. Links to various sites from which this material has been culled are availabe under "general sites." There are also some general sites for the specific disciplines listed under those discipline rubrics. Some of the links are directly to the video or audio data, others are to pages where the data must be sought. Both on this site and on numerous of the linked sites, you'll be well served by using your windows' search function. As always with classifications, there is a certain amount of ambiguity involved.

  8. Podcasts from the University of Oxford [iTunes]

    Sciences, Continuing Education, and Life Sciences. By clicking on "show media items" under the description of each lecture, you can see all the titles in the lecture series, and choose from there. In "Philosophy" under the Humanities division are the distinguished John Locke Lectures, which include twelve different talks. In the Social Sciences Division, you will find topics such as the "Environmental Change Institute Podcasts from Oxford University" that consist of lectures, seminars, and interviews. "Forced Migration Online Discussions" include exchanges between experts, interviews with refugees, and lectures at the Refugee Studies Centre. Overall, the site is a great educational resource and one that could be used in any number of classroom settings.


  9. Yearbook of the United Nations

    Since 1946, the United Nations (UN) has produced an annual work known as the Yearbook. This volume serves as the principal reference work on the United Nations and their various activities. Recently, the UN digitized the Yearbooks from 1946 to 2005 and placed them on this very handy website. Visitors to the homepage can use the drop down menu offered here to look through any of the volumes that interest them. Within each volume, visitors can read through chapters, which usually include sections on political and security matters, economic and social questions, and a host of legal questions. For those persons looking for specific topics, each volume can be searched individually, or users may also wish to use the "Power Search" feature to refine their search even further. Finally, a "Share" feature allows users to share their findings via Google, Digg, Facebook, and other popular social networking sites

    UCI research in open source software development focuses on empirically-based studies of the processes, practices, and communities that develop open source software and related artifacts. Ethnographic and virtual enthnographic research methods are employed in the field studies of open source software development in communities that include those centered on Internet infrastructure, X-Ray astronomy and deep space imaging, networked computer games, and academic software design research.

    The Privacy and Cyber Crime Institute is located in the Ted Rogers School of Management. Institute research projects have been funded by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada's Contributions Program. The Privacy Institute undertakes research about privacy and cyber crime issues such as workplace surveillance, biometrics, monitoring, identity theft, security breaches, and online social networks.

  18. Chandrayaan-1

    Chandrayaan-1 is an Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) mission with ESA participation that will study the Moon in great detail. Using a wide range of electromagnetic wavelengths, it will analyse the lunar surface as well as its crust in high resolution, so as to gain a deeper understanding of the origin, evolution and composition of Earth's only natural satellite. The mission will also drop a lunar probe onto the surface, to test the properties of the surface upon impact.

    Chandrayaan-1 is the first collaborative mission between ESA and ISRO, and also the first Indian scientific mission leaving the earth's vicinity.
