  7. Joining the game

    The Anil Ambani- controlled ADA group recently launched its online casual gaming portal www.zapak.com positioned as India's largest online gaming catalogue which currently has over 150 casual games and plan to offer more than double of these by end 2006. Most games on offer will be exclusive to the portal, panning across single player and multi- player categories, as also across genres such as action, racing, puzzles, strategy, and sports. "With the world's largest youth population, India as a market offers tremendous potential, "says Rajesh Sawhney, president, Reliance Entertainment Ltd. " The gaming market is expected to grow to $200 million by 2010. Therefore, gaming is an important part of our entertainment strategy and we are investing @100 million in this venture over next three years." The company said that it has set up operations of the portal on 100 servers which and support up to six million users. This is expected to rise to 1000 servers in the next three years. Recently the portal unveiled plans to add unique content such as the new 'Zapak Tv' feature, offering audio visual content including online game reviews, features on online gaming, news on the online gaming industry as well as contests. The gaming industry in the country is yet very small but growing well. Obviously, the portal would have the 'first mover' advantage.

  9. World Economic Forum

    Water emerged as one of the dominant themes at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2011. "The challenge of securing safe and plentiful water for all is one of the most daunting challenges faced by the world today," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. No individual, firm or nation can escape the consequences of water scarcity. Many participants, however, agreed that the water challenge could be solved, using collaborative approaches, political will, market mechanisms and innovative technology like those which arose in response to global warming.

    New information and communication technologies brought about major repercussions on all aspects of life. This prompted UNESCO's Member States to mandate the Organization in November 1997 to keep them abreast with these new ethical, legal and societal challenges by establishing a permanent international monitoring mechanism.

    The NASA Research and Education Network (NREN) project focuses on the development and early deployment of high-performance networking technologies to provide exciting new capabilities for NASA science and engineering. As NASA Enterprises integrate these emerging networking technologies into their activities, NASA will be able to revolutionize mission applications involving space exploration, the design of air and space vehicles, Earth system modeling, and access to information contained in vast databases. Organizationally NREN is the research networking component of the Computing, Networking and Information Systems (CNIS) Project within the Computing, Information and Communications Technologies (CICT) Program.

  14. Third World Academy of Sciences

    TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, represents the best of science in the developing world. Its principal aim is to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in the South.

    TWAS is an autonomous international organization, founded in Trieste, Italy in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the South under the leadership of the late Nobel laureate Abdus Salam of Pakistan. Originally named "Third World Academy of Sciences", it was officially launched by the then-secretary general of the United Nations, Javier Perez de Cuellar, in 1985. Since its inception, TWAS's operational expenses have largely been covered by generous contributions of the Italian government.


  15. Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators

    The ASTI initiative compiles, processes, and makes available data on institutional developments and investments in agricultural R&D worldwide, and analyzes and reports on these trends in the form of periodic policy digests. It entails a large amount of original and on-going survey work focused on developing countries.

    Outputs of the ASTI initiative are widely and frequently cited in both national and international agricultural research policy documents and used to analyze a myriad of policy issues including financing of agricultural R&D, developments in biotechnology, setting agricultural R&D priorities, and research planning and impact studies.


  16. Science Museum of Minnesota

    This website is produced by the Science Learning Network and the Science Museum of Minnesota. Aimed at younger children, there are several interactive areas including projects on 'Windmills to Whirligis', 'Worms' and 'Monarchs and Migration'. Teachers and children all over the world are encouraged to participate in these projects. The philosophy of the project is clearly illustrated in the excellent 'Thinking Fountain' section. Teachers and students create 'Thinking Fountain' cards on templates provided by the museum. The goal is to encourage questioning and inquiry. Each card highlights an interesting resource related to science. It then refers you to three other selected connections that extend the learning process. The cards are arranged in three different ways: 'Card Clusters'. 'Mind Maps' and 'A-Z'. This is a model of interactive learning that hopefully will inspire other site providers.

    Brought to you by the Library of Congress, this nifty service allows you to ask a question and receive an email response from a librarian. As a word of warning, they request that users avoid simply sending in their homework questions. However, this service can be invaluable for specific research questions. Answers are typically received within five business days.
