    TECHzingo is constantly watching Slashdot.org, Digg.com, TheRegister.co.uk for new stories, extracts related "tags" and displays them in a cloud. The cloud below shows the current popular news tags. The bigger the tag, the more stories are about its topic. In one glimpse you can see what the news is about, watch the cloud change as real world events unfold and are then forgotten.

  4. CORDRA (content Object Repository Discovery and Registration/Resolution Architecture)

    CORDRA (content Object Repository Discovery and Registration/Resolution Architecture): An open, standards-based model for how to design and implement software systems for the purposes of discovery, sharing and reuse of learning content through the establishment of interoperable federations of learning content repositories.

    CORDRA is designed to be an enabling model to bridge the worlds of learning content management and delivery, and content repositories and digital libraries. CORDRA aims to identify and specify (not develop) appropriate technologies and existing interoperability standards that can be combined into a reference model used to enable a learning content infrastructure.


  5. DiVA

    DiVA, the Digital Scientific Archive (Digitala Vetenskapliga Arkivet in Swedish) is a comprehensive description of a system developed at Uppsala University Library. A repository where the documents are archived is one part of the system. This is why we chose the name the Digital Scientific Archive.

    The DiVA system has been developed within the framework of the DiVA project which started in September 2000. The system is in full operation since January 2003. A common portal for the participating universities of the project has also been developed within the same project. Sometimes it is called the DiVA Portal..


  6. Open Research Society: ORS

    The Open Research Society (ORS) is a non-profit international organization dedicated to the promotion of the "open research" paradigm in scholarly publishing, research cooperation and dissemination of research results in the field of Information Technology in a broad sense.

    The initial effort of the society will be that of contributing to the open access movement in scholarly communication with a community-based approach to scientific journals and research monographs.

    ORS is open to any individual that is interested in the activities of the society. Membership in the Society is free. Fees will be only required to support specific open research initiatives, in which participation will take place by volunteering.

    Wikibooks is a Wikimedia project, set up on July 10, 2003. Since then, volunteers have written around 13,433 book modules in a multitude of books.


  8. AC/UNU Millennium project - Global challenges facing humanity: Challenges in science and technology

    The Millennium Project of the American Council for the United Nations University (AC/UNU) is a global initiative with research think tanks of futurists, scholars, business planners and policy makers who work for international organizations, governments, corporations, NGOs and universities. The purpose of the Millennium Project is to serve as an international utility to assist in organizing the future research by updating and improving humanity's thinking about the future and making these thoughts and ideas available to geographically and institutionally dispersed think tanks. It addresses various challenges facing the humanity and the current challenge in science and technology is - how can scientific and technological breakthroughs be accelerated to improve the human condition? The website briefly describes the present scenario wherein the scientists have been successful in creating microbial fuel cells, visually imaging 60 nanometer objects, demonstrating quantum entanglement of three macroscopic objects, identifying gene variants for schizophrenia, depression, and other mental diseases, using implanted chips in human brains, using surgical robots and so on. It further addresses the enormous risks involved in the application of these new technologies and scientific developments. It gives a regional description of the status of science and technology and invites the users to participate in an online survey. The results of the survey will be included in 2009 State of the Future to be published in August 2009. The global challenges in the other areas can be accessed from the homepage of the Millennium Project website.

    DataSheet4U.com is a free electronic engineering tool that enables the user to locate product datasheets from hundreds of electronic components. It provides access to several datasheets, electronic component datasheets as pdf and links to "more than 800,000 PDF IC" datasheets.


  11. Flash animations for physics

    Many complex concepts in physics are difficult to explain. Animation provides a way of explaining and demonstrating such complex concepts. This web page has 84 Flash animations. These are grouped under the following categories: chaos, classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, micrometer caliper, nuclear physics, optics, oscilloscope, quantum mechanics, relativity, sound waves, vectors and waves. The selected animation will appear in a separate window. The animations can be downloaded from the website. In addition, the website provides access to a tutorial on using Flash to do physics animations and this is also available for download.


  12. MATLAB central file exchange

    The MATLAB central file exchange contains thousands of files contributed by users and developers of MATLAB, Simulink and related products. Categories include aerospace, automotive, biotechnology,pharmaceuticals, medicine, chemistry, physics, communications, controls and systems modeling, earth sciences, financial modeling and analysis, image processing, mathematics, optimization, signal processing etc. The site contents will be useful for researchers, teachers and students.


  13. Nanotechnology Whitepaper library

    This website is by NanoBusiness Alliance, an industry association working towards the advancement of nanotechnology and microsystems. To meet the research and educational information needs of those working in this field, it has developed Nanotechnology White Paper Library with a collection of links to more than 500 nanotechnology white papers, presentations and reports. Access to most of these is free but some require registration. The registration is free and the registered users can download the whitepapers, case studies, webcasts and receive email alerts as well.


  14. OAses - The open access toolbar

    OAses, a toolbar for Internet Explorer, is designed to make Internet searching easier for students, academicians and scientists. OAses searches many open access resources, free databases, and search engines. The toolbar is free to download and use, easy to install and it does not require registration. The interface has both search and browse options. It runs on Windows 98/NT/2000/ME/XP, Internet Explorer 5.01 or higher. OAses currently allows the user to search the following resources:

    • OAIster - An information retrieval resource from University of Michigan to search collections of freely available, academically-oriented web resources.
    • Directory of Open Access Journals- Free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.
    • Creative Commons- A resource with photos, music, text and other works available free for use
    • Project Gutenberg- The largest collection of free electronic books
    • FindArticles - A resource for journal articles from more than 900 publications, dating from 1998 through to the present
    • PubMed Central - Free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature by U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).

    The search engines namely Google, Yahoo, MSN and Vivisimo Clusty, a metasearch engine, can also be searched. The site provides FAQs, download links and installation instructions.


  15. Problem solving with Computational Infrastructure for Operations Research (COIN)

    "Operations research is the field of mathematical optimization devoted to finding an optimal allocation of limited resources by choosing an alternative that maximizes payoff, or minimizes cost, from among those that satisfy the given constraints. Problems like these are pervasive, but the use of optimization techniques to solve them is not". The real value of the mathematical models is in generating problem-solving techniques that apply to the models, such as search strategies, constraint generation and approximation algorithms. Based on these and other similar techniques, the researchers at IBM have developed Computational Infrastructure for Operations Research (COIN). This is an open source project for optimization software and it helps developers build robust optimization solutions on a standard base.

The site provides news, tutorials and education materials, technology briefs, patents, free news alert on subscription, a reference desk with several reference resources, databases, technology roadmaps etc. It has a forum for posting the articles.
