  1. Chicago Manual of Style

In 1906, the first edition of The Chicago Manual of Style was published by the University of Chicago. Over the past one hundred years, the Manual has been revised and edited fourteen times, and is now in its fifteenth edition. On this site, visitors may register for free and gain access to the search tool for this latest edition. While this feature is certainly helpful, there are a number of equally useful aspects of the site. The first is the area that gives a number of examples of Chicago-style documentation, such as the humanities style and the well-known author-date system. Equally helpful is the "Q&A" section where the editors answer such timely questions as "If someone has a PhD and is a professor at a university, is their title Doctor or Professor?"

As part of the research work on polarization of light, extensive amount of software was developed to evaluate different theoretical models for light scattering. NIST through this website, offers library of models so far developed for free use. "The SCATMECH library consists of a set of C++ object classes which allow programmers to manipulate polarimetric quantities. It adds to standard C code data types corresponding to polarimetric quantities and optical properties of materials. It further adds a base class which acts as a socket for light-scattering models, and includes a variety of specific models, e.g., particles, subsurface defects, and microroughness, which have appeared in our work. The classes are designed to be expandable, so that anyone can add new models and functionality to the library". The website includes examples, demonstrations and documentation.

  14. Foresight Nanotech Institute:Advancing Beneficial Nanotechnology

Founded in 1986,Foresight Nanotech Institute was the first organization to educate society about the benefits and risks of nanotechnology. At that time the focus was on preparing society for nanotechnology, then a little known science and technology.

Today, with the basic framework of public understanding in place, the Institute is focusing on advancing beneficial nanotechnology. The efforts are turned to guiding nanotechnology research, public policy and education to address six major challenges that humanity faces.

The six Foresight Nanotechnology Challenges are the framework for our work. This work is accomplished by providing balanced, accurate and timely information to help society understand and prepare for nanotechnology through public policy activities, publications, guidelines, networking events, tutorials, conferences, roadmaps, and prizes.

  17. Discovery in Design: People-centred Computational Issues

An EPSRC 'Designing for the 21st Century' Cluste. The objective of the cluster is to identify primary research aspects concerning the development of people-centred computational conceptual design environments that engender concept and knowledge discovery across diverse design domains.

Current computer-aided design tools support the later, well defined stages of design where the design product is physical, tangible, and comprehensible. However, more abstract concept formulation and development is poorly supported, especially where uncertainty is an inherent characteristic. Furthermore, computer-aided design is domain specific. There is little or no exploitation of cross-domain experience. This cluster will identify research issues that have the potential to redress both these imbalances.
